THE WARTIME ISSUE
never changes her colors
of blood, hope, and blues
we tell our relatives
to stand still
against the ominous combination
the promise of
explosives and heartbreak,
executions and stunted midlives,
black nights and heavy memories
we say smile
because we love what she represents
in that ritualistic folding
before we lay her gently
atop filled boxes.
